Choosing the right glass is not just an aesthetic detail: it is an integral part of the recipe. It influences ice dilution, cooling speed, serving temperature and how aromas rise to the nose. For a bar or restaurant, it has a direct impact on the cocktail menu: serving an Old Fashioned in a coupe or a Daiquiri in a rocks glass confuses the menu reading and can alter the taste in the mouth.

This guide covers each major cocktail family to help you match, service after service, the right glass with the right preparation.

The glass according to the preparation method

Even before thinking about the type of cocktail, the first key to choosing is the preparation method used behind the bar.

Shaken cocktails served “up” → coupe or martini glass

A shaken cocktail then served without ice (“up”) must be presented in a stemmed glass that keeps the temperature low longer without further diluting the drink. Both the coupe and the martini glass fulfill this role, with a stylistic nuance: the coupe evokes a rounder, vintage look, while the martini glass offers a sharper, more contemporary profile.

Stirred cocktails → mixing glass then low glass

Stirred cocktails (Martini, Manhattan, Negroni) are prepared directly in a mixing glass, which allows controlled dilution with a spoon without ever introducing air into the drink, unlike the shaker. The result is then served in a low coupe or a martini glass depending on the recipe.

Cocktails on the rocks → rocks glass / old fashioned glass

Served over ice cubes, these cocktails need a wide, stable glass with a thick base to accommodate a large ice cube without reducing the liquid capacity. This is the role of the rocks glass.

Glasses for classic and character cocktails

The martini glass for dry and elegant cocktails

The martini glass remains inseparable from the classic bar image, popularized far beyond the professional world. Its history can also be found in our article The Martini glass in popular culture: movies, series and icons. Its wide flared opening is designed for dry cocktails, without ice, where you want to preserve maximum surface area for aroma release.

Glasses for long and refreshing cocktails

The highball glass for long drinks (mojito, gin and tonic)

Tall and straight, the highball glass is tailored for drinks lengthened with sparkling water, soda or tonic. Its height leaves the necessary space for ice, fizz and garnish (mint, citrus) without overflowing the preparation.

The collins glass for very long drinks

Even narrower and taller than the highball, the collins glass is reserved for cocktails with a very high volume of mixer (Tom Collins, John Collins). Its tapered shape slows down carbon dioxide loss and keeps the fizz going longer at the table.

The coupe for a vintage vibe (Champagne cocktails, daiquiri)

The coupe brings extra retro elegance, particularly suited for Champagne-based cocktails or classic Daiquiris served “up”.

The rocks glass for strong spirit cocktails

For short and potent alcohol-forward cocktails (Old Fashioned, Sazerac), the rocks glass remains the benchmark: its thick base highlights the spirit’s color while supporting a large ice cube that slows down dilution.

Glasses for specific uses

The shot glass for short formats

Reserved for very short formats consumed in one gulp, the shot glass serves a different purpose: minimal volume, quick grip, suitable for high-volume service (parties, events).

Original/tiki glasses for the visual experience

Original glasses, including tiki glasses, focus on the visual experience rather than pure technique. They accompany exotic or signature cocktails, where presentation is an integral part of the service.

Equipping your bar properly

Standardizing glassware according to your menu style

It is impossible to own a dedicated glass for every single recipe. The challenge is to cover all menu preparation methods with a limited number of references from the cocktail glasses range: a versatile stemmed glass (coupe or martini), a highball glass, and a rocks glass.

Unbreakable/polycarbonate glassware for events

For outdoor service, beach clubs, poolside or events, unbreakable polycarbonate glassware maintains the shape and look of traditional glassware without the risk of breakage—a requirement often mandated by public venues.

FAQ

Can a shaken cocktail be served in a rocks glass rather than a coupe?

Technically yes, but it changes how the customer perceives the cocktail: the rocks glass generally signals service over ice, while the coupe or martini glass signals “up” service, without ice. It is best to reserve each shape for its proper use to avoid confusion in the dining room.

Is the mixing glass used solely for preparation or can it also be used for serving?

It is used exclusively for preparing stirred cocktails. Once the mix is diluted and chilled, the cocktail is strained and poured into the appropriate serving glass (coupe, martini or rocks depending on the recipe).

What is the concrete difference between a highball glass and a collins glass?

The collins is narrower and generally taller than the highball. This tapered shape slows down carbon dioxide loss, making it more suitable for cocktails with a very high volume of carbonated mixers.

Is it necessary to invest in unbreakable glassware if you don’t do events?

Not necessarily. Unbreakable glassware makes complete sense outdoors, by the pool or in venues where regulations require it. For traditional dining room service, traditional glassware remains the standard, offering a better feel in the mouth and presentation.

How many minimum glass types are needed to equip a versatile bar?

Three references cover most needs: a stemmed glass (coupe or martini) for “up” cocktails, a highball for long drinks, and a rocks glass for ice-bound cocktails or strong spirits.

Questions regarding the Loyalty Program

How does the loyalty program work?

Our loyalty program is designed to reward our regular customers. To be eligible, you must have a customer account and have accumulated purchases totaling at least €300, regardless of how the orders are split. It is not necessary to make a single €300 purchase; multiple orders can add up to reach this amount.

How are loyalty coupons calculated?

As soon as the cumulative amount of your orders reaches €300, you automatically benefit from a 5% discount on every product purchased. This discount is credited as loyalty coupons on your customer account, in the “My rewards” section. For example, if you place a €100 order, a €5 loyalty coupon will be added to your account.

How to use my loyalty coupons?

You can use your loyalty coupons on your next orders:

• You can use your loyalty balance to cover the entire amount of your order if the balance is sufficient. • You can also deduct part of your order amount based on the available balance on your account. Your loyalty coupon balance will be automatically applied at checkout, according to your choice. You can check your coupon balance at any time in the “My rewards” section of your customer account.

How long are my loyalty coupons valid?

Loyalty coupons have a limited validity period. Remember to use them before they expire, visible in the “My rewards” section of your customer account.
