The history of the Pornstar Martini
The Pornstar Martini is a fairly recent cocktail, yet in just a few years it has become a modern classic of mixology. It was created in the early 2000s by Douglas Ankrah, a well-known South African bartender based in London. Founder of the “Townhouse” bar and a leading figure of London’s cocktail scene, he wanted to invent a drink that was both exotic, indulgent and elegant.
He originally named his creation the “Maverick Martini”, in reference to a bar in Cape Town, South Africa. But he soon settled on the provocative name Pornstar Martini, a bold choice reflecting, in his view, the sexy, glamorous and extravagant side of his cocktail.
The blend of vodka, passion fruit, vanilla and a shot of prosecco won people over instantly with its balance of freshness, sweetness and fizz. The cocktail quickly became a runaway success in London, then across the rest of Europe and around the world.
Today, the Pornstar Martini is regarded as one of the most popular contemporary cocktails, often ranked among the best-sellers at countless bars. It has become a true symbol of modern mixology, blending creativity with elegance.
The name of the Pornstar Martini always intrigues the curious. When asked why he chose such a bold term, its creator, Douglas Ankrah, would reply with a smile that the cocktail was designed to be “sexy, seductive and extravagant, like a movie star”.
Another fun fact: the cocktail was first served under the name Maverick Martini in a London bar. But Ankrah felt the name lacked character. Looking for something more striking and provocative, he decided to rename it Pornstar Martini — a risky choice, but one that contributed enormously to its success and international fame.
